Is WSOP Coming to Michigan?
The online poker scene in the state of Michigan could soon be getting a major jolt as the World Series of Poker is likely coming soon.
The World Series of Poker is the biggest online poker site available, and it has already announced plans to target Michigan.
A July 12 launch date has been announced for the World Series of Poker in Pennsylvania and Michigan should be next. The fact that WSOP is willing to launch without the promise of interstate poker options is big for Michigan.
Currently, there are just two online poker options in Michigan but it is an industry that has done well since a launch near the end of January. All iGaming options in Michigan continue to see growth and that trend is not expected to end anytime soon.
BetMGM and PokerStars currently offer online poker in Michigan, but adding WSOP would be a big win for the state. This is the operator that offers massive contests throughout the year, with the final tournament taking place in Las Vegas.
Not only with this be a great option for players in the state but it should also offer some great promotions. WSOP announced in Pennsylvania, “the best sign-up offer, the largest guarantees, and a new and improved WSOP.com poker client.
888 Holdings is the parent company of the World Series of Poker and it mentioned a Michigan launch earlier this year. Pennsylvania was always expected to get the site first and that is indeed the case.
In order to gain access into Michigan, 888 has partnered with William Hill and Caesars. There are currently just three commercial casinos in Michigan that offer a full slate of casino games.
Caesars recently agreed to a deal to purchase William Hill and that will make this launch easier. William Hill had a deal with the Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and that deal will carry over.
Interstate Poker Now in Play
Late last month, the United States Department of Justice failed to appeal a decision that was made in regards to interstate poker. This battle has been going on for years, but it appears that there will no longer be any roadblocks in the way.
With the lack of appeal, states can begin working on authorizing and launching interstate poker, although it could still be a few months down the road. Michigan has already approved interstate poker, but there are still some steps that need to be taken.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board continues to review interstate poker agreements with other states, and an agreement could be made in the coming weeks. There are a few states that already have an interstate compact in place, and Michigan could simply join that agreement.
Either way, the fact that there will soon be online poker sites available for Michigan residents is the biggest news as that was always going to be the first step. The launching of WSOP Michigan will give the state some added ammo when it looks to reach an agreement for an interstate compact.
