Online Gambling Live in Michigan
After a long wait, online casino gambling and online sports betting are now both live in the state of Michigan.
It was expected that sports betting would roll out before the other forms of online betting, but that was not the case.
MI Sportsbooks and online casinos could begin accepting wagers at noon on Friday in Michigan, and there were plenty of online options available to customers. Michigan is expected to become a huge online betting market, and the first weekend should provide some massive numbers.
Retail sports betting launched in Michigan back in March 2020, but the state has had very limited results due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the retail sportsbooks have been shut down or are operating under strict health and safety protocols.
On Friday, 10 different sports betting operators began taking bets, and there is a chance for this number to increase in the coming weeks and months. Here are the online sportsbooks that are currently live in Michigan:
- Barstool
- BetMGM
- BetRivers
- DraftKings
- FanDuel
- Golden Nugget
- PointsBet
- TwinSpires
- William Hill
- WYNNBet
Both commercial and tribal casinos in Michigan were allowed to partner with an online sportsbook to launch on Friday. Michigan has been able to attract some of the biggest names in the sports betting industry, and that will help drive the handle and revenue figures.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board had previously targeted a December 2020 launch date, but final tests took longer to complete than expected. There wasn’t a ton of notice from the MGCB before online sports betting kicked off at noon on Friday.
FOX Bet is also expected to offer an online sports betting option, but it is unclear when that site will launch. There are still four tribal casinos that have access to a sports betting license, but they have yet to partner with an operator.
The Barstool Sportsbook has partnered with Greektown Casino, and this arguably brought the most fanfare to the launch date on Friday. Some of the biggest Barstool Sports personalities were on-site for the launch and were providing updates throughout the day on social media outlets.
A Leader in the Midwest
The Midwest portion of the United States has seen massive growth in sports betting since 2019, and Michigan is not currently one of the leaders. This area does not have many online casino gambling options, and this could allow Michigan to post some massive numbers.
New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the only other states that offer a full suite of iGaming options. This includes sports betting, online casino gambling, and online poker.
Launching online casino gambling at the same time as sports betting will take away some of the excitement in Michigan, but it will allow those operators to begin making money immediately. A number of online operators have been approved to offer both betting platforms.
This is the first time in US history that a state has launched all three online betting options at the same time. All three commercial casinos in the state can offer online gambling, along with the state’s tribal casino properties.
